The 2023 Dadasaheb Phalkek awards were recently held in Mumbai, which “attempted” to award the best in cinema for the year 2022.
But it seems all has not gone down well with cinegoers, looking at the list of winners.
The awards are particularly being called out for the ‘Best Actor’ award which has been given to Ranbir Kapoor for the critically panned ‘Brahamastra’.
Netizens are particularly unhappy about the category, citing Rishab Shetty’s performance in Kantara, which was lauded by many as the best performance of the year.
Several people on social media have gone on to bring-up the subject of nepotism also, as the ‘Best Actress’ award has also gone to Ranbir’s wife, actress Alia Bhatt for Gangubai – who is also the daughter of filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt.
Needless to say, internet is not happy with the pick.
Here are some reactions:
1)

Wait! So they gave Ranbir Kapoor the Best Actor award for Brahmastra over Rishab Shetty for Kantara? Tell me again nepotism doesn’t exist and it’s just hard work…. 👊#DadaSahebPhalkeAwards2023

The character of Shiva portrayed by Rishab Shetty is light years ahead of Ranbir Kapoor’s Shiva of Brahmastra.

Awards are such a joke in India. An actor should be shamed to receive an award for a parody performance such as this

While Rishab was given an award in the line of ‘Most Promising Actor’, that isn’t deemed enough by those who believed his performance exceeded everything else that was put out in 2022.
Kantara – which was one of the biggest success stories of the year, was also written and directed by Rishab himself, whose act in the film gave many people goosebumps.
Perhaps in another lifetime or a parallel universe, we’ll have an award show which will honor the talents rightly.
