Malaika Arora On Item Numbers: “It was very liberating to be this object of desire”

Bollywood item songs (dance numbers with raunchy visuals sexualizing the female body) have often been called-out by viewers for being sexist, and for objectifying the female body.

But despite the criticism from a certain sections, not only do the songs continue to be made, but they also continue to translate into hits.

Malaika Arora – who’s been the face of a number of such item songs in Bollywood, was recently asked her opinion on the same and the actress and dancer firmly stated that she in fact finds being part of these item songs – ‘liberating’.

Malaika – who’s known for her dance sequences in songs like – Chhaiyya Chhaiyaa, Maahi Ve, Chikni, Munni Badanaam, etc, stated that she likes being the ‘object of desire’ through these songs.

In a recent interview, here’s what the actress was quoted as saying by The Indian Express:

“I never looked at it as, ‘Oh my God, you’re being objectified’. For me, it felt like I was in control. I’m anyway one of those women, I like being in control, I like being the master of my own destiny.I don’t like being told what to, how to, where to. It felt amazing.”

She further added:

“I felt that I could just be on screen, as this woman and this object of desire. For me, it was very liberating.”

Interesting take on the much-debated subject.

What are your thoughts on it?
