Asha Bhosle Criticizes Today’s Talent Shows For Focusing On ‘Fashion’ Rather Than ‘Singing’

Asha Bhosle has always asserted how some changing trends in showbiz have negatively affected the quality of music being churned-out.

The legendary songstress, who’s recorded thousands of songs, in her nearly 70 years long career is also no stranger to telling it like it is, when it comes to the state of music.

She is also someone who is frequently seen in reality talent shows, participating as a judge, mentoring budding singers and aspirants.

But Ms. Bhosle, who’s 88 now, feels that the reality shows of today have shifted their focus from being about ‘singing’ to being about the overall visual of what makes a ‘stage artist’, namely – fashion and dance.

In a recent interview with Mid-Day, Asha Bhosle expressed her resentment over reality shows that focus on the dancing abilities and fashions statements of contestants.

Here’s what she was quoted as saying:

“While singing at reality shows, attention is paid to the fashion quotient, and dance. Dancing and singing have no connection with each other, then why make a singer dance? It affects the breathing, and hence a person’s ability to sing.”

She further pointed out, how in her times, appearance of the vocalists was not really a talking point:

“We spent our life in a saree and two braids, and made a career singing songs,” adding – “I encouraged aspirants to not focus on the hairdo or clothes, and merely stand and render a track.”
