IMDB has released their annual list of the 10 best films in India, released across all languages.
On any other given year in the past, you would have presumed that the list would only constitute of Bollywood biggies, with a few non-Hindi films mentioned here and there.
But 2022 was different. The year that saw the rise and rise of non-Hindi films, which gained popularity across the country breaking language barriers one after another. Be it Pushpa, KGF, RRR or Kantara – the year saw South Indian films making a mark across the country, putting Bollywood in the ‘second-billing’ position for the first time.
And the same reflects in IMDB’s list of the best Indian films of the year as well. As only one Hindi or Bollywood film has made the list and that – the Vivek Agnihotri directed blockbuster – The Kashmir Files. The film occupied the second spot on the list.
The list has been topped by SS Rajamouli’s magnum-opus – RRR, as the film also gears-up for major Oscar glory – after rigorous campaigning from the filmmaker in the United States. The film has already garnered historic nominations at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice awards in the U.S., and the Oscars seem like the next inevitable step.
KGF’s sequel, which became the top grossing film of the year rounded-up the top 3, signifying the commercial aspect that IMDB clearly considered while picking the films on the list.
