Kaante Director Trashes SRK, Says: “Feel sorry for today’s filmmakers who grew up watching his films”

Sanjay Gupta is one of those filmmakers who has never really minced his words while speaking about Bollywood stars.

The director who was behind the cult film ‘Kaante’, has now made quite a commentary on actor Shah Rukh Khan and the kind of viewers he attracts.

Sanjay Gupta has expressed his admiration for actors who appear in muscly action films, as opposed to rom-coms.

While praising actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, Sunny Deol, Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff & Anil Kapoor – Sanjay pointed out how he was grown-up with cinema that had on-screen like them.

In continuation with that statement, Sanjay went on to add that he feels sorry for the filmmakers in their 20’s and early 30’s today, who grew up watching romantic comedies of Shah Rukh Khan.

Here’s what mensxp quoted him as telling from an earlier interview with PinkVilla:

“People say meri filmon mein mard hote hain. That is because I have grown up on that. I have grown up watching Mani Ratnam, JP Dutta, Mukul Anand, Feroz Khan my greatest influence & Ramesh Sippy. I mean look at the way these guys presented their men. Their men came with swagger, their men came with right lines. Those men were not wimps.”

He went on to add:

“And when I was growing up in my school days, the hero was Amitabh Bachchan yaar. Baat hi khatam ho gayi na yaar. It all starts & ends with him. There was Amitabh Bachchan, there was Vinod Khanna, there was Dharmendra. This is in my school years. In my college years, there is Sanjay Dutt & Jackie Shroff & Anil Kapoor & Sunny Deol.”

He concluded:

“I feel sorry for the filmmakers today, the newer lot who are maybe in their late 20s or early 30s boss they have grown up on Shah Rukh Khan & love stories. Unhonein woh cinema dekha hi nahin hai. Woh hero kya hota hai, hero ki entry kya hoti hai & today when that same thing is being shown to you through KGF or an RRR or Pushpa, you are going mad. But that is how it was always meant to be but we somewhere down the line intellectualised it.”

This does not however mean that Sanjay Gupta holds anything against Shah Rukh Khan.

During the controversy revolving around SRK’s son Aryan Khan’s arrest, Sanjay was one of the few people who had been very vocal about the whole episode and had extended his support to the actor and his family.
