A few months ago Anand Mahindra had promised the renowned ‘Idli Amma’ a house, after he got to know of her inspiring story through social media.
The elderly woman, whose name is M Kamalathal is a resident of Vadivelampalayam village in the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu.
She rises up before sunrise everyday, living in a humble cottage, and has been selling idlis at only Rs 1 for several years, never increasing her price so as to reach as many poor people with her food as possible.
Immense gratitude to our team for completing the construction of the house in time to gift it to Idli Amma on #MothersDay She’s the embodiment of a Mother’s virtues: nurturing, caring & selfless. A privilege to be able to support her & her work. Happy Mother’s Day to you all! pic.twitter.com/LgfR2UIfnm

Her selfless devotion earlier inspired Anand Mahindra, who then promised her a house upon hearing her story – a pact which he has fulfilled now on the occasion of international mother’s day.
The businessman and philanthropist took to his social media to reveal that Mahindra Group has gifted a special kitchen to the small business owner, who has now been regarded as ‘idli amma’, not just in her locality but across the nation – since her story has gone viral.
This is Anand Mahindra’s tweet from 2019, when he became aware of the story, where it all started from…
One of those humbling stories that make you wonder if everything you do is even a fraction as impactful as the work of people like Kamalathal. I notice she still uses a wood-burning stove. If anyone knows her I’d be happy to ‘invest’ in her business & buy her an LPG fueled stove. pic.twitter.com/Yve21nJg47
