Raveena Tandon Praises South Indian Films, ‘Culture Is Deeply Rooted In Their Stories’

The success of Non-Hindi films from the Southern-state of India has brought a fresh-breathe of change in the mainstream movie-scene of the country.

With recent juggernaut success of films like Pushpa, RRR and now KGF Chapter 2, several movers and shakers of Bollywood – an industry that has continually dominated the film-scene in the country for decades, are asking themselves the question – what might they be missing, that is making them fall-short in the box-office lately, when compared to their Tamil or Telugu counterparts?

The Pan India success of films, that were mostly just considered ‘regional’ a few years ago, has opened a plethora of possibilities – especially when it comes to the ideas pertaining to uniting all moviegoers, for the greater good of Indian cinema.

Actress Raveena Tandon, has her own analogy on why she feels South-Indian films stand out on their own.

In a conversation with Times Of India, the actress stated:

“[South Indian Films] are always at an advantage because their culture and traditions are deeply rooted and woven in their stories.”

She further added:

“I’ve done a lot of South films even in the 90s and even now. In fact, I think they’re always at an advantage because they keep their traditions, their rituals, their culture so deep rooted and woven into their stories that it always hits with the masses.”

She also pointed out how it all boils down to creating characters that resonate with the masses – something Hindi-cinema has been doing a lot off late, especially in the last 10 years – with realistic stories coming from small-towns, depicting characters that speak to the common man.

“The masses always identify with their characters,” the actress stated “…and that is something very important that I think filmmakers should keep in mind and that is to not go away from what your mass audience wants and that is something which they’ve always kept alive.”
