Gangubai’s REAL Family Slams Alia Bhatt Film For ‘Defaming’ Her: “My mother has been turned into a prostitute”

Just weeks after its first trailer and teaser was unveiled, it seems Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai has found itself into a few pots of controversies.

The Alia Bhatt starrer, which sees the actress portraying the character of Gangubai Kathiawadi – has been called out by Gangubai’s adopted son Babu Raoji Shah and her granddaughter Bharti – who have come forth expressing their displeasure over the film.

In a recent interview with Aaj Tak, the family of Gangubai has called-out the makers for not even consulting them before making the film, insisting that Gangubai wasn’t really a sex worker as it has been depicted in the film.

Here’s what they have been quoted telling the publication:

“My mother has been turned into a prostitute. People are now saying inexplicable things about my mother.” – says her adopted son, Babu Raoji.

The family has even gone ahead and filed a case against the makers. Here’s what their lawyer said during the interview:

“The way Gangubai was portrayed is completely wrong and baseless. It is vulgar. You are representing a social activist as a prostitute. Which family would like it? You have made her [Gangubai] a vamp and lady don.”

Bharti, who’s the granddaughter of Gangubai, said:

“My grandmother used to live in Kamathipura. So, did every woman living there become a prostitute? My grandmother had adopted four children there – two daughters, Shakuntala Ranjit Kawi (Bharti’s mother) and Sushila Reddy, and two sons, Babu Raoji Shah and Rajinikanth Raoji Shah. We are from this family, but now we’ve been termed ‘illegal.’ When our grandmother went through with the adoption, such strict adoption laws were not in place.”
