‘I Was Short, Had A Distinct Voice’: Rani Mukerji Gets Nostalgic After 25 Years In Bollywood

Rani Mukerji has completed 25 years in showbiz and yet the actress continues to give us films, that showcase her ability to constantly challenge herself as an aritst.

The talented star, who’s known for her acclaimed work in films like ‘Yuva’, ‘Saathiya’ and ‘Black’, made her film debut in the year 1997 – with the not-so-successful – ‘Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat’ and continued on with some other lesser-known projects for a while.

She later garnered mainstream success with her role in Karan Johar’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, but still continued to do roles that most actresses of her time, found way too ‘unglamorous’.

In a conversation with IANS, the actress recently dished on how hard it was for her to be accepted initially because of her distinct voice and height – which were the first things moviegoers of that time noticed about her.

It is on the occasion of the release of Bunty aur Bubli’s forthcoming sequel, the actress will be marking her 25 years in showbiz, which makes it all the more special, considering it is one of her most loved films.

Here’s what she was quoted telling IANS on the subject:

“It’s special that I have completed 25 years in cinema with the character that is probably closest to my heart. I feel I was born to play Vimmy. I remember being blown away by her when ‘Bunty Aur Babli’ was first narrated to me. Her energy, even from the pages of the script, was very infectious, and I’m fortunate that I have her in my filmography.”

Speaking on how grateful she is of the fact that Indian audiences accepted her, especially when audiences around that time were obsessed with female actors who looked a certain way, Rani stated:

“With changing times, movies change, and audiences accepted someone like me, who had a distinct voice and was short, compared to the standards which people used to judge Indian actresses. I am fortunate that my audiences have kept me going for the last 25 years.”

And we couldn’t agree more!

Rani not only made it despite being an “unconventional heroine” for mainstream Bollywood, she ruled for years with hits after hits.

Here’s looking forward to 25 more years of great films with her talent.
