SRK Pranked Gauri’s Family At Their Reception, Told Them She’d Have To Wear Burqa After Wedding

Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri are one of the most beloved couples of Bollywood.

And despite the two belonging to different religions, the subject has never really been brought-up as anything to have caused a rift between them, over the years.

Reminiscing over the time the two had got married back in 1991, SRK spoke of how he joked with wife Gauri’s family, who’s a Hindu, during their wedding reception – pranking them by saying that she’d have to wear only Burqa after their marriage.

SRK spoke about the “prank” when he appeared on co-star Farida Jalal’s talk show, several years ago. The actor revealed how some of Gauri’s relatives were already in a ‘hush-hush’ discussion about whether she’d convert to Islam after their wedding, which served as a base for his joke during the ceremony.

In the midst of their reception luncheon, Shah Rukh got up and told Gauri to wear a burqa and go for namaz, telling her family that she’d have to do it everyday and might as well go for a name-change soon. Obviously, it was all a joke, as the actor always maintained how love should transcend religious barriers.

“I had a lot of fun but the lesson in all this was that one respects religion but it should not come in the way of love,” he was quoted telling, “Now, the time has come when her family loves me more than they love her.”

Amidst the present day talk about love-jihad and inter-religion marriages, the interview seems to have gone viral once again.
