Asha Bhosle Criticizes Singing Reality Shows For Concentrating On ‘Dancing’ and ‘Appearance’

Asha Bhosle is not happy with the way singing reality shows are conducted these days.

The legendary singer and pioneer of Indian film music has expressed her disappointment at some of the famous television reality shows, stating how they tend to concentrate more on the fashionable choices and appearance of the singers, rather than their singing talents.

In a recent interview with Mid-Day, the 87 year old icon spoke about singing shows wherein contestants are constantly urged to get more involved in ‘dancing’ along with showcasing their vocals – something Ms. Bhosle has dismissed as a ‘wrong’ criteria for selecting hardcore singers.

Here’s what she was quoted telling the publication:

“While singing at reality shows, attention is paid to the fashion quotient, and dance. Dancing and singing have no connection with each other, then why make a singer dance? It affects the breathing, and hence a person’s ability to sing.”

Reflecting further on her hay-days, the singer stated how they were more concerned about their vocals than how they appeared or dressed, while working as playback singers.

“We spent our life in a saree and two braids, and made a career singing songs.” – she said.

She concluded her thoughts on the subject stating – “I encouraged aspirants to not focus on the hairdo or clothes, and merely stand and render a track”

Although times have certainly changed, as people have started concentrating on live performances, and tours and concerts have become a thing – which wasn’t the case before, but Asha Bhosle also has a point – as people often tend to miss ‘great vocals’ in the midst of all the showy theatrics.

In the world autotune-generated music, one can certainly trust the voice of Asha Bhosle.
