When Karan Johar & Sonam Kapoor Made a Snarky Remark About Kangana Ranaut’s “English”

Kangana Ranaut’s agitation with Anil Kapoor’s daughter, Sonam Kapoor – goes way back.

The two have exchanged a number of war-of-words over the years, but it all may be taken back to the start of 2010’s, when Kangana Ranaut was yet to experience top-notch stardom.

Sonam Kapoor – appeared on producer Karan Johar’s ‘Koffee With Karan’ and participated in his infamous, ‘Rapid Fire’ – Q&A session, which basically gives his guests an opportunity to vent out their frustrations with questions – that seem to just organically coincide with what they want to say, anyway.

During one of the ‘rapid questions’ Karan then asked Sonam to name a star who ‘needs to be given the “power” to speak English fluenty’. Sonam started laughing as if she was refraining from uttering the name that popped in her head, only to be persuaded by Karan to say it out loud.

She then took Kangana’s name, as Karan too chimed-in, nodding his head, over what seemed their mutual report card over Ms Ranaut’s ‘questionable English.’

Watch the cringe-worthy segment from the controversial show below:

This was after Kangana had already become a National Award winning actress, for her role in ‘Fashion’, but was yet to experience stardom with movies like Queen and Tanu Weds Manu Returns, which catapulted her to the top 2014-onwards. Back when she was still a young girl from a small village in Himachal Pradesh, trying to find her way in the hustle-bustle of showbiz, working on her skills as an actor and as a public figure.

As the debates around the alleged snobbish behaviour of some “star kids” are intensifying, people are also going back to this footage – to wonder what really goes on in the celeb-parties of the ‘English-speaking’ figures, and how those who don’t have the same background or pedigree are often treated by the rich and established ones.

Equally importantly – how did we get to a point in the present day and age, when someone’s English-speaking skills even matter, especially when they have so much more to offer with their talent?

It’s 2020, can we please do away with judging someone’s credibility with their English?

Sonam Kapoor needs to learn to do better!
