In our latest video, we have attempted to put together the list of the greatest films curated in the past 100 or so years of Hindi cinema.
Not paying any mind to the generic popularity or commercial success of some famous Bollywood releases, that are generally picked to represent the best that our cinema has to offer, we have put together 10 movies of various styles and genres of film-making, which may or may not have been box-office smashers.
From the parallel wave cinema of India, that resulted into several gems back in the 70’s and 80’s – with movies like Ankur, Mandi and Bhumika – to name a few, to the new-age realistic cinema – that has totally demolished the boundaries between what is considered ‘commercial’ and what is considered – ‘niche.’
While Hindi cinema is probably at it’s most experimentative right now, with Indian filmmakers being provided the liberty to display their art to it’s full potential in celluloid, we have picked a considerable number of movies from the past – that were way ahead of their times, and set a benchmark for others.
