The First-Ever Kissing Scene Of Indian Cinema Was Filmed in 1933

Although Indian cinema and cinema-goers have managed to mature enough to not create much ruckus anymore, when it comes to the display of sexuality on-screen, things were quite different a little over a decade ago.

Even a kissing scene involving the A-listers of Bollywood, would invite tabloid-gossip and create headlines, so much so that majority of ‘big stars’ generally avoided it, substituting the same with suggestive innuendos and what not.

But you’ll be surprised to know it wasn’t quite the 80’s or 90’s when the first lip-lock was depicted between the lead actors of a movie in Indian cinema. It, in fact, goes nearly 8 decades back – to the year 1933.

The first-ever kissing scene in Indian cinema was film for a bilingual film entitled, Karma – which starred Devika Rani and Himanshu Rai.

Rani and Rai – who were married at that time, essayed the fictional roles of Indian royals and a story of their romantic escapade from customary boundations. And it was during one such scene, the two actors were shown kissing – making a first, for Indian cinema.

Not only that, it was also – the longest kiss captured in film at that point, lasting nearly 4 minutes.
