96 Year Old Kerala Woman Scores 98% On Literacy Exam!

Education has seen many facets in the constantly developing and changing times of our country. And thus it isn’t uncommon to come across people who have had to give up on on it due to factors that directly influenced their studies – like financial dependencies, social orthodoxy or lack of infrastructure, to name a few.

But a 96 year old woman from Kerala has broken all such barriers to finally get her literacy exam cleared, after devoting years to provide her family with a livelihood.

Karthiyani Amma from Kerala’s Alappuzha has not only become the oldest student to appear for the state’s Aksharlaksham literacy program, but has also achieved another milestone by becoming the oldest person to top it.

Achieving a score of 98 out of 100 in an exam that tested her reading, writing and mathematics skills, Karthiyani Amma has become the latest viral face on internet, as people can’t help but gush over her determination.



Amma worked as a domestic help, house cleaner and sweeper for the most part of her life, in order to take care of her family after the untimely death of her husband. It is now after all these years, she finally got back to sit on that bench and appear as a student to finish, what she never got the opportunity to start.

Her journey doesn’t quite end here. Karthiyani Amma now plans to clear the Class X equivalent exam.

She should officially be the face of the slogan – ‘It is never too late to learn something new.’
