In a historic judgement, a 5-judge bench of Supreme Court has unanimously decided that the 2.77 acre land in Ayodhya will be allotted to Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas for the construction of Ram temple.
A dispute that has lasted for centuries and has been the pivotal point in modern-day politics of India, finally comes to a conclusion with the verdict on Sunday morning, as the apex court has decided to settle it, once and for all.
While the construction of a temple has been given a go ahead, the ‘Muslim side’ of the argument has also been ordered to be allotted an alternate land of 5 acres elsewhere in Ayodhya to build a mosque.
Here’s an excerpt of the verdict from Times of India:
“SC has ordered the allotment of alternative land to Muslims for the creation of a mosque while decreeing the disputed site in suit 5 filed by Deity. SC further stated that Centre will formulate a scheme within 3 months for setting up a board of trustees for the construction of a temple at the disputed site.”
Supreme Court gave the verdict in mere 40 days, while reading reports and analysing views from all quarters – including that of the ASI (Archaeological Survey of India), historians and the disputing parties.

Prior to the verdict, leaders across the country had urged people to maintain decorum and respect the verdict of the apex court, no matter which side it falls in.
Prime Minister Narenda Modi had also urged people to maintain peace a day before:
“The Supreme Court’s verdict on Ayodhya is coming tomorrow. For the past few months, the Supreme Court was hearing the matter and the entire country was watching it with curiosity. During this time, efforts made by various sections to maintain peace and harmony are quite praiseworthy.”
9 September, will certainly be marked as a new dawn in Indian socio-political fabric, as this verdict settles this nearly-500-year-old dispute.
