PM Modi's message to Youth: "Leave your cellphones and Go outside to play"

Apart from condemning the use of violence by people on religious and cultural grounds, and elaborating on the various festivals celebrated across different regions of the country, the prime minister also stressed the youth to venture out more to get involved in physical activities rather than .

“The young generation of our country should come forward in the world of sports and in today’s computer era I would like to alert you to the fact that the playing field is far more important than the play station,” Modi said.

“Play FIFA on the computer, but sometimes show your skills with the football out in the field. You must be playing cricket on the computer but the pleasure of actually playing cricket in an open field under the sky is something else,” he further added.

The prime minister made the remark in reference to the upcoming National Sports Day on the 29th of August – which is observed on the birth anniversary of Hockey wizard Dhyan Chand.

“The country celebrates National Sports Day on the 29th of August. This is the birth anniversary of the great hockey player, hockey wizard, Major Dhyan Chand ji,” Modi said. “His contribution to hockey was unparalleled. I am reminding you of this because I want the younger generation of our country to take part in sports.”

Making a remark on how the present generation is more so dependent on technology for everything and has developed such fondness for it that it is deprived of outdoor sports and activities, Modi reflected on how the times have changed. 

“There was a time when the children in the family went out to play, the mother would first ask ‘when will you come back home?,’ he said. “Now the times are such that children when they come home, they either start watching cartoons in a corner or are glued to mobile games. And the mother has to shout ‘when will you go out?”
