Woman raped on footpath in broad daylight. Onlookers take videos instead of helping

Every time we think humanity couldn’t sink any lower, we are proven wrong with another instance to let us hang our heads in shame.

Given the pathetic situation of women’s safety across nation and the increasing number of cases related to sexual assault, rapes and gender-based crimes – one might hope the situation of law and order would be stringent enough to curb such heinous acts to some extent.

An abominable incident from Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh not just proved that notion wrong but also put humanity to shame due to the appalling ignorance of its spectators.

The said incident took place on Sunday, when a 21 year old auto-driver named Ganji Siva raped a woman sitting on the pavement as onlookers stood without helping – filming and taking pictures of the act.

What is even more astonishing about the crime is that it took place in broad daylight at around 2:30 PM on a busy street of the city.

According to sources, the woman who was sitting next to a tree on the footpath had left her home after a family dispute and was too frail and weak to retaliate or protest as she had not eaten for several hours. The man, who is said to be under the influence of a substance (possibly alcohol) at that point, forced himself upon her – as passersby walked past it like it was an ordinary sight.

By the time police arrived on the scene, Siva – who works as an auto driver, had already left the spot. He was later traced and arrested by the police later the same day.

“It clearly shows how the people have become insensitive to attacks on women,” said one of the policemen.

There is so much about this incident that makes you question everything around you. The fact that the man had the nerve to commit the shameless crime in broad daylight in front of several onlookers. Or the fact that so many people stood there as silent spectators, insensitive to the pain being inflicted upon the victim.

Have we lost the ability to sensitize over such atrocities against women?

Makes you wonder where we are headed as a society and a nation.
