Vidya Balan finds it ‘ridiculous’ that Sanjay Leela Bhansali got all the credit for Gangubai instead of Alia Bhatt

There has been a significant number of rise in the women centric movies in the industry in recent times. The old notion of mandatorily having a male lead is slowly diminishing from the industry.

Vidya Balan who has given us fantastic female centric movies like Kahani and The Dirty Picture, recently spoke about the gender partiality in terms of giving credit in the industry.

During an interview with Film companion Vidya spoke her heart out on the talked about gender disparity and gave an example of 2022 released movie Gangubai Kathiawadi. A candid Vidya questioned that how the director gets the credit when a women centric movie does well.

She said, “How come Gangubai did well? If a woman’s film does well, it’s the director’s credit, and this is ridiculous.”

She further talked about the hard work female actors have put-in in the industry to bring where it is today, she said, “We worked so hard as women to have a certain standing today, where we’re headlining films. More and more actresses are doing that. I love how post-pandemic, because the men’s films aren’t working, they suddenly turn around and say that the women’s films aren’t going to work all the more. How ridiculous? I really want to say, ‘What about Gangubai?’ It did more than most male-driven films.”

Alia Bhatt received praises for her performance as Gangubai Kathiwadi. The movie crossed 200 crore at the box office with the budget of almost 180 crores, barely surviving to recover its huge costs.
