Dilip Kumar was recently posthumously conferred with Dr Bharat Ratna Ambedkar Award and his wife and partner of over 5 decades, Saira Banu came to collect the honor.
Saira, who has shied away from public life and media spotlight, since the passing of Dilip Saab – who has often been regarded as one of the greatest icons of Indian cinema, made a rare appearance to receive the honor on the late actor’s behalf.
Still dealing with her partner’s death, the legendary actress was nearly inconsolable as she referred to the actor as the ‘Kohinoor’ of India.
The award was handed over to her by union minister Ramdas Athawale at an event in Mumbai.
But Saira couldn’t hold back her emotions Mr. Athawale spoke highly about the pair and how the actress always stood by him in their 55-year-old companionship. She went on to add that this is the reason why she avoids attending public ceremonies as they make her emotional, thinking about Dilip Kumar’s absence.
Saira Banu also stated that Dilip Kumar should now be honored with a Bharat Ratna award. While speaking to the press, she added:
“It should happen, because Dilip Sahab has been the ‘Kohinoor’ for Hindustan. So ‘Kohinoor’ should definitely receive a Bharat Ratna. He’s still here. He is not in my memories, I believe it’s the truth that he is here with me at every step, because this is how I will be able to live my life. I will never think that he’s not here. Wo mere paas hain, hamesha mera sahara banke rahenge– mera Kohinoor.”
