‘We Speak Different Languages But We Are United’: Kamal Haasan Speaks On Hindi vs South Debate

The linguistic war that started in the wake of competition between Hindi and Southern-regional language movies, catapulted into a national debate, reignited an age-old discussion about India’s national language, and where all languages stand on the subject.

While several people have weighed-in on the debacle, now actor Kamal Haasan has tried to point out something that we must adhere to and listen, to understand that despite such diversity in our country, we have always been united and should always stay that way.

The veteran actor gave his two cents on the subject and went on to add how everything that happens within India or is achieved within India is every Indian’s.

He stated:

“I am an Indian. What are you? Taj Mahal is mine, Madurai temple is yours. Kanyakumari is as much yours as Kashmir is mine.”

He also expressed his disapproval of the term ‘Pan-India’, stating that films like ‘Mugham-E-Aazam’ were also “pan-India” and it is a “new-coinage” being used popularly these days.

Kamal stated that India has people speaking all kinds of different languages, “but we are united.”

Point well made, sir.
