Lata Mangeshkar is the same to Indian music, what Raj Kapoor is to Indian films.
Both of these personalities have served as pioneers of their respective fields, and have since achieved iconic status not only among the countless aspirants who have followed in their footsteps but also among the masses, who love and adore their work.
The duo also collaborated on a number of occasions, as Ms Mangeshkar rendered her glorious instrument to several of Kapoor films.
One such archival footage of the magicians ‘at work’ is available on YouTube, and it showcases how they both appreciated and admired each other’s talent.
In the rare footage, Lata Mangeshkar can be seen recording the song ‘Chitthiye Punk Laga Ke Udd’ from the film ‘Henna’ – which starred Raj Kapoor’s son Rishi Kapoor in the lead. The film was released in the year 1991, and it was entirely a ‘Kapoor house’ production, as it was co-directed by Raj Kapoor and his eldest son – Randhir Kapoor and was co-produced by his other son, Rajiv Kapoor.
Hence the showman’s presence was inevitable in the studio as well, as the music for the ambitious project was being curated. And who could miss the opportunity to see the legendary Lata Mangeshkar at work?
As her voice came piercing through the studio recording booth and fell on Mr. Kapoor’s ears, he was seen completely smitten and mesmerized by her talent and her melodious instrument.
