Mallika Sherawat: ‘Before even a kissing scene was unacceptable, now frontal nudity is accepted’

Mallika Sherawat entered the film scene at a time when Indian cinema was still evolving in terms of displaying sexuality or sex on-screen.

To the kids who grew up in the 90’s and became young adolescents in the 2000’s, Mallika was one of those names from showbiz who were partly responsible for a sort-of sexual awakening of an entire generation.

But things were pretty stern and tight in those days, when even a kissing scene will bring the film to limelight or wearing a bikini would deem the actress ‘controversial.’

Flash forward to the OTT-era of 2021, things have obviously changed a lot.

Mallika, in a recent interview, gave a nod to that “change”, as she acknowledged how people have evolved since then.

Here’s what the actress was quoted as saying in an interview to Zoom TV:

‘I think we’ve really evolved as a society because now frontal nudity is accepted, When I started my career, just a kissing scene was not accepted.’

She further added:

‘That’s what the patriarchal system is. It’s always the women who are always targeted, not the men. Not only in India, but that’s all over the world. Men walk away with everything, they get away with everything, it’s like those who blame the woman for everything. I don’t know why, but more so in India, I feel.’

Mallika is totally right.

Times have certainly changed as films and shows have become a lot more open-minded when it comes to displaying sex. And that is all due to the changing perceptions of those who watch it.
