Raveena Tandon Says She Faced Prejudice In Bollywood, “I Was Not Sleeping Around For Roles”

Raveena Tandon who’s previously dished on her bittersweet experience in the past, working in Bollywood aka the mainstream Hindi film industry, has once again shared some more titbits from her experiences.

The actress, who famously worked in some of the biggest romantic dramas and comedies back in the 90’s, has called out the prejudice she faced in her time.

Speaking about the same in a recent interview with Hindustan Times, the actress said:

“There used to be these cabals which used to have the heroes, their girlfriends and their journalist chamchas. What used to shock me was that a lot of these female journalists would do something like this to another woman. When they now stand up and say, we’re feminists and writing ultra-feminist columns. I want to turn to them and tell them ‘really?’”

She further stated:

“It was a difficult time. But fortunately, I still worked with the biggest directors, I did the best films that were coming up and carved a niche for myself and did it my way.”

Speaking about how she fought against the same in her own manner, the ‘Daman’ star stated:

“I never belonged to any camps, I didn’t have godfathers, didn’t have heroes promoting me. I was not sleeping around with heroes for roles or having affairs. In a lot of cases, I was considered arrogant because I wasn’t pandering to what the heroes wanted me to do – laughing when they wanted me to laugh, sitting when they asked me to sit.”

It seems that almost everyone who did not hail from a ‘filmy background’ saw this kind of bias and prejudice.

What matters is that people are finally speaking out about their experiences and it is no longer being slipped under the rug. Perhaps, this truth might end-up saving some lives in the future, in the tough and brutal world, one calls – showbiz.
