Akshay Kumar Says It Hurts When People Call Him ‘Canadian’. Has Now Applied For Indian Passport

The fan wars on Twitter and other places of social media has become so intense in the past couple of years – that it often takes an ugly route. And nobody is spared from it. Not the biggest of stars or politicians.

Akshay Kumar – who’s delivered a string of back-to-back box-office hits in the recent years, too has often been teased by online trolls for allegedly holding a Canadian citizenship, and yet packaging the subject of ‘patriotism’ in his movies – as his USP.

Appearing at this year’s Leadership Summit by Hindustan Times, Kumar delved on the subject and stated how it affects him and his family deeply.

The actor said that it indeed hurts him to hear some people question his loyalty towards his nation, despite being born Indian.

As for his ‘Candian citizenship’, here’s what he had to say on it all:

“There was a time when I had 14 flops in a row and I was wondering what to do. One of my closest friends who stays in Canada told me ‘come here and we will work together’. I started the process to get a Canadian passport because I felt my career was finished and I won’t get more work here. But my 15th film worked and I never looked back. I never thought of changing my passport.”

He further added:

“It makes me very sad that despite being an Indian, I need a small notebook to prove it. It hurts me. But, I don’t want to give anyone even that chance, so I have applied for it.”

Earlier in May, Akshay had spoken about the subject too, by releasing an official statement on his Twitter handle.

Here’s what he had to say:

Great that he’s at least facing the question head-on.

Can the love for your country be warranted by what your passport says?

What do you think?
