Actress Surekha Sikri Gets A Standing Ovation While Receiving National Award For ‘Badhaai Ho’

Surekha Sikri delivered one of the most memorable performances of 2018.

The 74 year old actress’s portrayal of a quirky, wicked, sarcastic yet lovable mother-in-law in Amit Sharma’s Badhai Ho, garnered love from all quarters – critics and audiences alike.

Recognising her work in the Ayushmann Khurrana and Neena Gupta-led film, the actress was honoured with the ‘Best Supporting Actress’ National Awards at the recently held ceremony in New Delhi.

And the recognition became all the more special as the actress received a rousing standing ovation from everyone in the audience as she proceeded to receive her award on stage.

Ms Sikri, who’s recovering from a brain stroke which took a toll on her overall health a few months ago, arrived at the venue on a wheelchair and reached the stage with assistance.

Here the precious moment she was met with a standing ovation for her recognition.

Wonderful to see a versatile talent like that being recognized for her work.

Here’s what she was quoted as telling after her win:

“National Award for ‘Badhaai Ho’ is an unexpectedly pleasant surprise. It is a great feeling right now. I got a call from the director just now informing about the National Award win. I wish he could have won the award. I thank all the people who liked the concept and the film and it feels great when your work gets appreciated.”

Hi I'm Gayle Sequeira (not on Instagram, sorry!) and I spoke to Surekha Sikri about what the past year has been like for her since #BadhaaiHo released. She says interest in her career has picked up though it hasn't translated into good roles. She's keeping the actor in her alive by attending acting workshops and going for look tests in the meantime. The August 15 holiday wasn’t one for her. That morning, she traveled by car to a major production house in Santacruz for a look test. The role she’s hoping to get is one she describes as “complex and interesting”, one written by a major director for a streaming platform. Sikri wasn’t nervous. She’d been rehearsing in front of the mirror at her Versova flat for days. The four-hour-long test was a tiring process, but her day wasn’t done yet. She then made the 30-minute drive to Andheri to attend an acting workshop by Atul Mongia. She’d been out from 12 pm to 9 pm. And at 74, she’s still raring to go.
