Driver Saves Elephant’s Life By Stopping Train Minutes Before Hitting The Animal

We have constantly been hearing about incidents of trains hitting and killing wild animals while passing through the forests. Most of the victims of such incidents are elephants, who often fall prey to the speeding vehicle while crossing tracks.

The alarming rate at which elephants are being killed due to this, has caused everyone to question if there is a proper reform needed to curb it down – like may be, creating big railings throughout the train’s passage in these forests, or enclosing part of these tracks with tunnels.

But before that happens, it would be great if our train drivers too could show assertiveness by responding to such uncertain events on time.

A West Bengal driver recently showed such diligence, as he noticed an elephant crossing tracks in front of the train he was helming – reacting intermittently and saving the animal’s life.

A video of the incident’s aftermath was shared by the official Twitter account of Alipurduar Division, N.F.Railways, with the following caption:

‘Today morning at 8.30 hrs, #AlertCrew of 55726 Dn Sri Uttam Barua & D.D.Kumar suddenly noticed that a Wild Elephant was walking along the track at Km 71/7 betn NKB- CLD & stopped train immediately with Emergency brake’.

If it was not for the alertness of this driver, another innocent life may have been lost.

Let us hope a proper solution is implemented by the government for this, in time.
