Wing commander Abhinandan Varthaman, who was praised for his resilience after being captured by Pakistani armed forces, is now being considered for top military honor.
Abhinandan’s MiG-21 was infamously shot down during the Balakot airstrike, leading to his capture and later release by the Pak army – after persuasion and force from India.
Varthaman soon became a national hero among both young and old, who all hailed his return to the country. Even his trademark mustache and beard-style were being copied with youngsters, as everyone sang his praises.
Now accordingly to online reports, the commander is likely to receive Vir Chakra – which is considered the top most honor in the Indian military.
It is possible that the award will be officially announced on Independence day.
