Rakhi Sawant Wins Dadasaheb Phalke Award For Best Item Dancer And The Internet Can’t Handle It!

Rakhi Sawant has long been associated with the controversies of her personal life and her bold and sometimes outrageous public statements so much, it is hard to even remember what her professional life entails anymore.

The reality TV star, who gained popularity with the first season of Bigg Boss and a number of other TV shows thereafter, has also appeared on several Bollywood movies as an ‘Item Girl’ – a term coined by Bollywood to address females who appear for a singular dance performance in movies.

But despite all of that you wouldn’t still expect any serious film or music award show to formally recognize that somewhat ‘sexist’ and rather ‘objectifying’ term, in order to honor anyone for the same.

Well, that just happened.

Sawant has been honored with the prestigious ‘Dadasaheb Phalke Award’ – and it has raised the collective eyebrows of netizens.

The prestigious honor which has previously been given to the likes of Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle and Shashi Kapoor, now also has Sawant’s name written on it.

Rakhi has been recognized by the Directorate of Film Festivals India as the ‘Best Item Girl Of Bollywood’, at a recently held event in Mumbai, which basically now makes her a Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner, joining the likes of Yash Chopra and Vinod Khanna.

Here is what she was quoted as saying by republicworld.com on her win:

“Finally! Thank God item girls are getting an award now. I have done around 75-100 item songs in all languages till date, I have done so many reality shows but I have never received an award. (Yes, I was nominated though). My legs and bones have given up dancing in Bollywood, I have put in so much hardwork. Thank you so much for honoring me with this award.”

For as bizarre as the news sounds, here is how Twitter has reacted to it:
