Shah Rukh Khan Defends Aamir’s ‘Thugs Of Hindostan’, Says People Were Too Harsh On It

Despite opening to a staggering figure of 51 Crores on it’s first day, ‘Thugs Of Hindostan’ had a shocking downfall in Box Office thereafter, due to the extremely poor word of mouth and fan-reviews.

Made on a budget of roughly 300 Crores, it would now be quite a struggle for this Aamir Khan starrer to even recover it’s costs.

Now that is certainly now what we had expected from one of the most talked about flicks of the year, but apart from it’s own poor content and direction, the extremely harsh reviews certainly helped it turn into a disaster.

Coming to the defense of the movie’s lead propagandist, Aamir Khan – the star’s long-time friend and co-star, Shah Rukh Khan recently spoke about the movie’s failure in an interview with The Telegraph.

SRK, who’s readying the release of his own big-budget entertainer ‘Zero’ in December, said that people have been way too harsh on Aamir and the film and it was ‘heartbreaking.’

Here is what he was quoted telling The Telegraph:

“The greatest contribution to Hindi cinema in the last 10 years has been from Aamir, and with Amitji, it’s been even longer. Now if a film of theirs (Thugs of Hindostan) doesn’t reach the level that you expected it to, does it take away from what they have done for cinema? I think some people have been a little too harsh. It’s heartbreaking. It doesn’t mean that their spirit is broken, they are all amazing artistes who will bounce back”

He further added,

“I may be speaking out of turn, but just like we have embraced Stree, we need to give some leeway to films like Thugs… that attempt something different. An adventure film has not been made in India in decades. Thugs… has tried to introduce this genre and kabhi kabhi upar neeche ho sakta hai. But the fact remains that in our cinema, we haven’t made an Indiana Jones and screw the comparison yaar, humne ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ bhi nahin banayi. So props to them for the attempt.”

‘Thugs Of Hindostan’ – was certainly being looked-up as one of the most anticipated movies of 2018, ever since the first few posters and details pertaining to it’s budget and scale became a topic of discussion.

But the movie’s downfall started from the moment Yash Raj Films shared the first official trailer back in September, and it not only failed to strike a chord with viewers but also became a subject of internet jokes, as people pointed out it’s supposed similarities with Hollywood blockbuster – ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean.’

From then on the movie was only waiting for another push to be go on a downward spiral and that happened upon it’s release, as poor critical reviews and harsh word of mouth followed after it’s release on 8th November.

During it’s 9 day run at the domestic box office – the movie has only managed to rake-in 141 crores so far.

Aamir and YRF now have to rely on the movie’s release in China, which happens to be Aamir’s biggest international market, considering his previous blockbusters in the country.

What do you think turned TOH into such a failure?
