Gautam Gambhir voiced his support for India’s transgender community by participating in the recent Hijra Hubba event, dressing up in a saree and other accessories.
Perhaps in an attempt to humanize and de-stigmatize the non-gender conforming sectors of the society, Gambhir chose to ‘walk the talk’, by dressing-up for the occasion.
It is no secret that the transgender and hijra community in India face discrimination and neglect at almost every stage of their lives, while many of them are also subjected to violence and other atrocities.
Urging people to support the community ‘as they are’, the former cricketer inaugurated the eight edition of the Hijra Hubba ceremony which was organized by the Shemari society.

But his pics, in which he appeared dressed up as a woman – especially for the occasion, soon went viral all over social media, as people applauded his guts and praised him for his attempt to challenge the conservative gender conforming ideologies.
Let us hope there comes a time when all those people who are passing a ‘salute’ to him with a few strikes on their keyboard, would also be willing to stand by all genders beyond the binary, in real life as well – to be their friends, colleagues and well-wishers – and treat them as ‘equals’ in the real world out there.
