Hakam Bhattal – a former Asian Gold-medal winner is battling for his life after suffering multiple organ ailments, making his condition so critical that his family exhausted their entire savings in his treatment.

The family, however, still fell short of funds for his further treatment which is when, they had to seek aid from the government.

Bhatta’s story was first shared by ANI, which is when Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore announced an aid of Rs 10 lacs to the family, following which cricketer Harbhajan Singh too sought their contact details.

Offering to assist them in whatever way he could, Harbhajan was quoted telling The Telegraph:

“Bhattal is not only a gold medalist but a Dhyan Chand Awardee. It pained me to read that Bhattal’s wife had to admit they were not well off and that the government should help those who bring glory for the country.”

We all know how India struggles to give credit to sports-persons and athletes, beyond the realm of cricket.

This one sport seems to have taken so much attention from people that they’re just not willing to share it with anything else – even with other athletes who bring pride and glory to the nation.

Although things are very slowly changing for the better, with other forms of sports also being provided a platform – thanks to the awareness being spread through media outlets, we still have a long way to go to completely uplift our athletes from the aghast situations they live and train in.

Good for Mr Bhattal that he got timely response and assistance from the ministry as well as Bhajji.

Let us hope and pray for her fast recovery now.
