The long fight to end the practice of triple talaq in the Indian Muslim community has come to an end.
A 7 bench jury of Supreme Court declared triple talaq ‘unconstitutional’ in a verdict which closely came out by a margin of 3 to 2.
Several Muslim women who had filed a petition with the court on Tuesday celebrated the verdict, stating that they now feel protected from the threat of being abandoned by their respective husbands.
Farah Faiz, president of the Rashtrawadi Muslim Mahila Sangh, said in a statement that the complete protection will be finalized once a proper law has been put in practice by the government. “The court has given a direction to the government to frame a law,” she said. “We have won half the battle. We will be victorious in the true sense only once the law is framed so as to make this practice punishable. There is no remedy for women against the practice till a law is framed.”
As women from all religious and ethnic background celebrated the end of the regressive practice, people on internet had a vast variety of opinions.
Here’s how people reacted on Twitter:

Abolishing #TripleTalaq may be a slap to Muslim Law Board but it is definitely not women’s freedom. Women need to be educated & independent.— taslima nasreen (@taslimanasreen) August 22, 2017
The Supreme Court has done absolutely the right thing by declaring triple talaq illegal and unconstitutional. It is an obnoxious practice.— Ramachandra Guha (@Ram_Guha) August 22, 2017
